What are the advantages and disadvantages of extruded aluminum profiles?
February 10,2023

Aluminum is a very common non-ferrous metal material in industry, and its application range is very wide. Aluminum is usually processed in various ways before it is used to facilitate its use. Extrusion is a forming process of aluminum, that is, raw materials such as aluminum ingots are melted in a furnace, and then extruded into a mold to form them. It can also extrude various profiles of different cross-sections.

Extruded aluminum profiles are suitable for the production of long and straight semi-finished products such as pipes, rods, wires, profiles, strips, and angles. The extruded aluminum profile can improve the deformation ability of the metal. During the extrusion process, the metal in the deformation zone is in a state of three-dimensional compressive stress, which can give full play to the plasticity of the metal and obtain a large amount of deformation. For example, the extrusion ratio of pure aluminum can reach 500.

Aluminum extrusion profiles have great flexibility in production. Products of different shapes and sizes can be produced on the same equipment by changing the mold. It is suitable for the production of multi-variety, multi-standard and small-batch products. Compared with the production of pipe profiles by the rolling method, the process flow is short and simple, and the equipment investment is less.

The structure and properties of extruded aluminum profile products are not uniform. Due to the uneven metal flow during extrusion, the surface layer and the center, the head and the tail of the product are deformed unevenly, resulting in coarse-grained rings on the surface of the product after heat treatment. Moreover, its production efficiency is low, and conventional extrusion methods cannot realize continuous extrusion. Guang Ya continuous extrusion machine developed in recent years can realize continuous extrusion, but it can only extrude pure aluminum and soft aluminum alloys. The waste produced when extruding aluminum profiles is relatively large, and each extrusion has excess pressure. Cut the head and tail, up to 10% of the weight of the ingot.

The above are some advantages and disadvantages of extruded aluminum profiles. In fact, each aluminum profile has its own characteristics. We only need to make corresponding choices according to our own needs.
